The main islands of the British Isles are Great Britain (Often called Simply Britain) and Ireland; numer tooth smaller islands in the vicinity. Only the northern part Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, with the rest of the sland being the Republic of Ireland. The British Islands are located between the Atlantic Ocean to the north and north-west and the North Sea to the east. Britain, the largest of the islands and the heart of the country, is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Dover and the English Channel, 21 miles (34 km) wide at its close point, and from Ireland by the Irish Sea. No place in the United is more than 75 miles (120 km) from the sea. The United Kingdom has four regions: England (50,337 miles square / 130,373 sq km), Wales (8,018 sq mI / 20,767 sq km) and Scotland (30,415 miles square / 78775 km ²), all on the island of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (5,452 square miles / 14,120 sq km), the island of Ireland. Each of these regions has its own geography. England is located in the southern part of Great Britain, with Wales extending off to the west. It is composed of mostly rolling hills. The highest elevations are in north. In the northwest, a region known as the Lake District includes a series of small lakes and soil reaches higher altitudes in an interval known as Cumbria Mountains. In the north-central region, there are limestone hills known as the Pennine chain. Scotland is the northern half of Britain, and is primarily mountainous. The Highlands occupy almost throughout the northern half of the country and contain the highest peaks in the UK. South of the Highlands are the central plains, with an average of 500 ft (152 m) and contains the valleys of the Tay, Forth and Clyde Rivers. Beyond this are South Uplands, with moorland cut by numerous valleys and rivers. Wales is a region of rugged hills and mountains, with tracts extended plateau and short stretches of mountain ranges deeply issected BYR valleys river. It extends west from England. Mountains Ambrian occupy almost the entire area and include higher Wales point, Mt. Snowdon (3,560 m / 1,085 m). There are narrow coastal plains in the south and west plains and small northern areas, including the valley of the Dee. Northern Ireland consists mainly of low plateaus and hills, typically 500-600 meters (152-183 m). At the center of the region is Lough Neagh, a large lake. There are some groups of islands and hundreds of individual nearby islands of Great Britain and Northern Ireland that part of the United Kingdom. The best know among them are the Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands, the Outer Hebrides, Skye, Mull, Islay, Arran, and the Islands of Scilly. In addition, the UK has no dependencies dispersion and a tour around the world, including islands all oceans except the Arctic. |
